The Department of Cardiology was founded in 1961. Through the efforts of several generations, it has become the diagnosis and treatment center for cardiovascular disease in Yangzhou. It is also the provincial key department and national drug clinical trail institute and enjoys considerable reputation both inside and outside the Province.

The Department includes divisions of intervention of coronary heart disease, pacing and cardiac electrophysiology, ultrasound cardiogram, electrocardiogram and clinical pharmacology trail institute of Ministry of Public Health. It consists of 19 physicians, among whom 9 are chief and vice chief physicians, including 3 MD and 9 masters. It owns almost all the cardiovascular clinical instruments and apparatuses available both at home and abroad and can carry out the diagnoses and therapies for all kinds of cardiovascular diseases, such as percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), radiofrequency catheter ablation(RFCA), permanent cardiac pacemaker implantation, cardioverter defibrillator therapy, cardiac resynchronization therapy, and congenital heart disease intervention. Each year the department fulfils over 1,000 cases of cardiac intervention therapies. The number of treated cases and the success rate for interventional procedures rank at the top inside the Province.

The department has published more than 100 papers, including SCI and CA paper. It has attained scores of Sci-tech Progress Prizes and received over 20 research grants. Each year it enrolls postgraduate students and advanced students at home and abroad.

Xiang Gu : Professor, Chief Physician, Master Tutor, Vice Director of cardiovascular Dept.. Special Interests: He can perform interventional operation such as pacemaker implantation, percutaneous coronary intervention,,radiofrequency catheter ablation, device occlusion for atrial septal defect and ventricular septal defect . He has developed the therapy of dilated cardiomyopathy and Ischemic cardiomyopathy by stem cell transplantation, the radiofrequency catheter ablation of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, implantable pacemaker and cardioverter defibrillator therapy, cardiac resynchronization therapy, the implantation of stents in coronary artery bypass graft and the radiofrequency catheter ablation of premature ventricualr contraction.

Rixin Xu : Chief Physician, Associate Professor, Vice Director of cardiovascular Dept..
